Travel: The Magic of the Unexpected

Travel changes you in lasting ways.  When you venture out into the world and embrace the thrill of exploration, you rarely return

as the same person.  More often, you come home more confident, independent, and hungry for new experiences.  There is something uniquely captivating about how other people and cultures live, speak, and celebrate life — from attending the
blue mosque in Istanbul, Turkey to cruising along Venice’s canals after an evening concert.  Travel shifts your perspective and
exposes you to the magic of the unexpected.  Travel also teaches independence — how to problem-solve, adapt, and make changes on the fly.  Some of the greatest lessons don’t come only from the destinations you reach or the people you meet,
but from how you navigate the inevitable missteps and moments when things don’t go according to plan.  Travel offers essential lessons in resilience, and each journey deepens your understanding of the world while helping to build character along the way.

Travel has the power to delight and fascinate us.  There is nothing quite like seeing a herd of elephants wandering across an
open
plain in Kruger National Park in South Africa or seeing a Cheetah in the open wild.

There is something truly artful in seeing a glass blower attending to his craft in the city of Venice, Italy.  There is something positively inspiring in hearing a music choral and organ performance at Westminster Abbey in London, UK.  And there is something very magical in sleeping under the stars aboard a gullet ship on the Aegean Sea near to Turkey.

At the same time, travel can be very challenging.  Imagine, a flight delay that results in a missed connecting flight that leaves you stuck in Frankfort, Germany airport with 600 plus other stranded passengers.  Then, having to figure out how to get a new flight,
all the while figuring where you're going to stay that night – because the next flight out isn’t until the following morning.  Imagine, having succumbed to the ravages of Covid and being stuck in a hotel room for three days in Marrakesh, Morocco.  And yet for all this, travel teaches us grit and resiliency.

Every travel experience is different in terms of the people we meet and the “must-see” places we visit.  At different stages of life,
we also learn to appreciate travel in different ways — from exploring Europe on fifteen dollars a day and sleeping in youth
hostels to enjoying the comfort of the finest accommodations aboard a Viking Cruises ship.  Each style of travel has its place
in the larger "high-play" adventure, reflecting who we are at that particular moment in life and what we seek from the journey.
Yet regardless of budget or circumstance, some of the most meaningful moments in travel happen when we set aside the
carefully planned itinerary.  Travel teaches us to be impulsive and to give in to the immediate moment.  Sometimes wandering aimlessly without a map through a lively market square or down a quiet cobbled street is where the the magic of the unexpected
reveals itself.  Whether traveling on a shoestring budget or in quiet luxury, the simple joy of discovering a place one step at a time remains the same.  As travel adventurer Thor Pedersen reminds us, “The only impossible journey is the one you never begin.”
